Helen Watkins Howk

Considered to be one of the finest infielders in the 22 -year history of the nationally famed A-1 Queens of Phoenix, she performed with equal skill at second base, third base and shortstop. Her strong, accurate throwing arm and virtually flawless play were instrumental in carrying the Queens to the Regional title and a strong showing in the 1945 national tournament in Cleveland. In 1951, she was founder and president of the first women softball league in Ft. Bragg, California, where she moved following her Arizona career. As coach, manager and player, she led several Ft. Bragg teams into regional tournaments before her retirement in 1956.
