A star outfielder for the nationally ranked University of Arizona baseball team in the 1930s, he entered softball competition in the strong Phoenix Major League and helped lead Travis Cafe, Tom’s Tavern and the Lettuce Kings into three national championship tournaments in Chicago. A versatile performer, he ranked among the top 10 hitters in major league softball and won the batting championship in 1946. The Lettuce Kings were regarded as the best men’s softball team in Arizona history and his contributions were significant to their success.
