As sponsor of Safeway Pay’n Takit Stores men’s softball team during the 1930s, his active and dedicated support played a major role in earning for Phoenix the title of Softball Capital of the World. His teams won numerous Major Men’s League and state championships and enhanced the prestige of Arizona softball by recruiting some of the nation’s most outstanding pitchers. The rivalry between his Safeway team and A. J. Bayless Markets produced some of the most exciting games in softball history and was the annual highlight of the Phoenix season.
