One of the leading sponsors of Phoenix major softball teams, he was considered by many to be Arizona’s greatest all-around athlete and sportsman, winning honors in golf, tennis, swimming, water polo, basketball, baseball, badminton, table tennis, volleyball, skeet, pistol and rifle shooting, fishing and casting. Also a member of the Arizona Golf Association Hall of Fame and the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, his Milt Coggins Sporting Goods sponsored both men’s and women’s softball teams. His women’s team later became the legendary Phoenix A-1 Queens and the men’s team merged with Tom’s Tavern in 1938 to become Phoenix Lettuce Kings, rated the best team in history of Arizona softball.
