An outstanding pitcher who played in several national tournaments with the legendary Funk Jewels of Phoenix. Ben Spalding was a booster of all sports - with special emphasis on softball. One of softball’s truly great leaders and promoters. Ben pioneered night softball in Phoenix when he built the first lighted field in 1934 at University Park where the dynasty of Arizona Softball had its beginning. He later joined Art Funk in building Phoenix Softball Park at 17th Ave. and Roosevelt, site of 20 men’s and women’s national tournaments.
