This year’s highlights include the induction of three Arizona Softball Hall of Fame members, funding 5 community college students, expanding the ASF Board, annual golf tournament and the ASF Celebration of Arizona Softball banquet, with memorabilia displays from our new Hall of Fame members, a video production, and a special Arizona Softball Hall of Fame display.

Dot Wilkinson Dies March 18, 2023
Wilkinson began playing softball for the Phoenix Ramblers when she was just 11 years old. The team was popular with local sports audiences, and they excelled, too – in 1940, they won the women’s amateur national softball championship. It was the first national title for any team in Arizona’s history. With Wilkinson as catcher, the Ramblers would win more titles in 1948 and 1949. She remained with the Ramblers for more than 30 years, batting .455 in 1954 and .450 in 1955 before her retirement from softball in 1965. Wilkinson took up bowling in the years before her retirement, becoming a champion in a second sport. Among her wins was the 1962 Women’s International Bowling Queen’s Tournament. Wilkinson was inducted into the National Softball Hall of Fame and Museum in 1970 and the International Bowling Hall of Fame in 1990. In 1975, she became the first woman inducted into the Arizona Hall of Fame, and a decade and a half later, she was named Arizona’s eighth greatest athlete of all time.

Roy Fries Dies March 15, 2023
April 8, 1927-March 15, 2023, Roy was born in Mason City, Nebraska and moved to Arizona in 1963. Roy was preceded in death by a daughter Luella, his wife Helen, son John and daughter-in-law Holly. He was a veteran of WWII and Korea. Roy was involved in ASA Youth Softball, High School, and Rec ball, which he helped run tournaments and umpired for many years. He began umpiring at the age of 19 and quit at the age of 83. In 2009 he was inducted in the Arizona Softball Hall of Fame. He worked at a corrugated box factory for 20+ years. Roy is survived by his daughter Debra (David) Lidster, son Roy, and Jack (Vickie), 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 2 great great granddaughters, and other relatives and friends. A memorial celebration will be held at the South Peoria Baptist Church 9000 W. Olive Avenue Peoria, Arizona 85345, on Monday, April 17, 2023 at 12:00 PM. A committal service will be held later that day at 2:30PM at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona with Military Honors. A memorial gathering will be from 4:30 to 6:30PM back at the church. Contributions may be made to the Arizona Softball Foundation 3818 E. Saint Catherine Avenue Phoenix, Arizona 85042, please indicate ASF Scholarship on the memo line. Dollars for Scholarships Program - 2022 Donation Goal $4,000
Arizona Softball Foundation would like to thank our volunteers, sponsors, and donors for stepping up and supporting our fundraising events and annual banquet. This year our 2022 Celebration of Arizona Softball Hall of Fame Induction Banquet had 125 attendees plus four new Arizona Softball Hall of Fame members, the 21st Annual ASF Golf Tournament raised about $5,300, and the 2021 Dollars for Scholarships raised $3,100. Presently, our four scholarships recipients receive $1,000 each, per semester while attending an Arizona community college.
